Why Specialist?

Why Standard Inspections Are Not Enough for EVs

Electric vehicles require specialist equipment and training that most general mechanics simply don't have.

🔋
Battery Pack — Most Expensive Component

The battery pack represents 30–50% of an EV's total value and is the single most important component to assess. Standard OBD scanners cannot read battery state of health — specialist diagnostic equipment that directly accesses the Battery Management System (BMS) is required.

Electric Motor & High-Voltage Systems

Electric motors, inverters, high-voltage cables and power electronics require specific diagnostic knowledge and safety protocols. Assessing motor performance, efficiency faults and inverter health requires EV-specialist training beyond standard automotive qualifications.

🔌
Charging Infrastructure Assessment

Charging port condition, connector pin wear, on-board charger performance and charge acceptance rate testing cannot be assessed by visual inspection alone — they require active diagnostic testing with specialist EV equipment.

Battery Health Guide

Understanding EV Battery State of Health (SoH)

What is Battery SoH?

Battery State of Health (SoH) is a measurement of an EV battery's current capacity as a percentage of its original factory capacity. A new EV battery starts at 100% SoH. As the battery ages and accumulates charge cycles, its capacity gradually decreases — this is called degradation.

Why SoH Matters for Range

SoH directly determines how far you can drive on a full charge. A Tesla Model 3 Standard Range with a rated range of 491 km (WLTP) at 100% SoH delivers approximately:

  • 95% SoH → approximately 466 km real-world range
  • 90% SoH → approximately 442 km real-world range
  • 85% SoH → approximately 417 km — a 15% range reduction
  • 80% SoH → approximately 393 km — a 20% range reduction

What SoH Should I Look For?

90%+ SoH is excellent — minimal degradation. 85–90% is good but should be reflected in price. Below 85% means significant range reduction — negotiate accordingly. Below 80% SoH means battery replacement ($10,000–$25,000) may be approaching and requires very careful consideration.

LFP vs NMC Batteries

BYD Blade Batteries and some Tesla batteries use LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry, which degrades differently to the NMC chemistry used by BMW, Hyundai, Kia and others. LFP batteries typically show lower percentage degradation but have different SoH measurement characteristics — our specialist equipment handles both accurately.

FAQ

EV Inspection Sydney — FAQ

What does an EV inspection in Sydney include?
Our Sydney EV inspection includes a full 200+ point vehicle assessment plus EV-specific checks: battery state of health (SoH) testing, charge-cycle history, range estimation, charging port integrity, electric motor condition, high-voltage system inspection, regenerative braking assessment, manufacturer-compatible OBD scanning, PPSR history check and a full road test. Same-day written report with photos.
How much does an EV inspection cost in Sydney?
EV inspection prices in Sydney start from $299 for standard electric vehicles and from $350+ for prestige EV brands requiring manufacturer-level diagnostics such as Tesla Model S/X, Porsche Taycan, BMW i4 M50, Mercedes EQS and Audi e-tron GT. Contact us 24/7 for an exact quote.
Why is battery SoH testing critical when buying a used EV?
Battery SoH (State of Health) directly determines how much range you get from a full charge. A battery at 85% SoH has lost 15% of its original range — significantly affecting the vehicle's usefulness and value. Battery replacement costs $10,000–$25,000 and cannot be economically repaired. Our SoH test tells you the exact remaining capacity before you commit.
Do you do Tesla EV inspections in Sydney?
Yes — Tesla is our most commonly inspected EV brand in Sydney. We inspect Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X — including battery SoH using Tesla-compatible diagnostic tools, FSD hardware version, Supercharger port condition, Autopilot camera assessment and full Tesla-specific OBD scanning.
Do you inspect BYD electric vehicles in Sydney?
Yes — we inspect all BYD models in Sydney including BYD Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, Shark and Sealion 6. Our BYD inspection includes specialist Blade Battery SoH testing using BYD-compatible diagnostic tools, charging port assessment and full BYD-specific OBD module scanning.
Can you inspect other EV brands in Sydney beyond Tesla and BYD?
Yes — we inspect all EV brands in Sydney including BMW i4 and iX, Mercedes EQA through EQS, Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, Kia EV6 and EV9, Polestar 2, 3 and 4, Volvo EX40 and EX90, Audi Q4 and Q8 e-tron, MG4 EV, Nissan Leaf and Ariya, Porsche Taycan, GWM Ora, Lexus UX 300e and RZ 450e and all other EV brands available in Australia.
